The value of sport in the history of italian emigration

"Smarginando. Festival Migrante" brings a variety of events to town to tell the story of Italian emigration. The concept and creation are by Leila Maiocco

The opening event is on Friday 28 October at 10.00 a.m. It will begin at the Galata Museo del Mare (at 1, Calata de Mari) and will continue at the Museo Nazionale dell'Emigrazione Italiana (1, Piazza della Commenda) with the inauguration of the MEI-Sport Section at 11.45 a.m.

Participants include Giovanni Malagò, CONI Chairman, Silvia Salis, Deputy Chairman, Paolo Masini, Chairman of the MEI Steering Committee and promoter and coordinator of the sports section, Gina Marques, Andrea Pedemonte and Romina Deprati, members of the sports research group, and Pierangelo Campodonico, Director of the MEI.

Institutional Greetings will be opened by the Mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, and the Councillor for Equal Opportunities, Mindful Lifestyles, Responsible Citizenship, Child Protection and Development, Protection of Pets, Consumer Protection and Sport, Simona Ferro

The history of Italian sport abroad not only sheds light on the experiences and lives of individual athletes and sports associations, but also ties in, from time to time, with other important aspects of the lives of our emigrants, such as politics, sociology and social welfare. Sport is capable of telling stories that really capture the different ways that Italy is present in the countries of arrival, the different lifestyles of the social classes, the difficulties encountered in order to emerge and succeed in a foreign land, the strong ties with the homeland, and the influence of Italian politics on communities abroad. All interwoven with historical events, events of international interest and the culture prevailing in the countries of adoption.

It is with this approach based on meticulous historical research that the Museo Nazionale dell'Emigrazione Italiana has recently forged relationships with various sporting realities on the five continents, founded precisely because of the initiative of Italian emigrants.

The following are just a few of the numerous countries are involved: Argentina (starting with the Genoese experiences of Boca and River), Uruguay (Penarol), Brazil (Palmeiras, Clube Atlético Juventus) Australia, (Brisbane City), Chile (Società Sportiva Italiana di Valparaiso).

Many narrative, photographic and video contributions have come from the various organisations: in addition to the stories of the clubs, those of various Italian athletes, from racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio to cyclist Nino Borsari, sports clubs and museums like the "Museo del Deporte de la provincia de Santa Fe", Rosario, Argentina, have come together tell the story of the Italian contribution to sport throughout the world.

An important occasion with a programme packed with theme-based activities.

Children can look forward to an excellent collaboration with the Science Festival which, together with Mu.Ma – MEI presents the "Pillole di Sport" workshop at 9:00 a.m..

"Running, jumping, swimming, skiing, cycling... these are all sporting activities that incorporate science in different ways, through physics, chemistry and biology.

With specially designed exhibits to make the effect analysed more noticeable, it will be easy to understand the scientific laws behind each movement. Tennis, golf, baseball, basketball, volleyball, football and many other sports are often based on the same principle, which explains, for example, the curve ball, the spoon or the top-spin. Psychology also plays an important role in both individual and team sports performance and the captain is always an extremely important figure and, together, we'll find out why.  Come and see with us where science lies in sport!"

At 12:00 noon, organised once again by the Science Festival, juggling and geophysics will take centre stage in the square in front of the Galata.

The meeting will be presented by: Michele Corti and Gina Marques.
Admission to the event is free while places last.
