Anna Sciacchitano

Anna Sciacchitano was born in Santa Margherita di Belice in the province of Agrigento in 1871 and left Palermo on the 1st of May 1908, on board the Lloyd Sabaudo ship Regina d'Italia, along with 1900 other emigrants.

On the 16th of May 1908, she landed in New York with her three children: Paolo aged 13, Maria aged 3 and Domenico, who was just over a year old. Her husband Giovanni Gustozzo had already been in the United States for months, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Once they had disembarked and completed the paperwork, they searched for their luggage among that of all the other passengers. It was at this moment that American photojournalist Lewis H. Hine surprised them by taking the iconic picture “Looking for Lost Baggage, Ellis Island”.
