MEI Foundation

On the 22nd of January 2018, the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Liguria and the Municipality of Genoa signed a development agreement (pursuant to art. 112, par. 4, of Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22 January 2004) for the creation of the MEI - Museo Nazionale dell’Emigrazione Italiana (National Museum of Italian Emigration).

Following the agreement, the parties identified the monumental complex of the Commenda di San Giovanni di Prè in Genoa as the place to host the new museum. The venue was close to the existing exhibition areas: the “Memoria & Migrazioni” and “Italiano anch'io” pavilions, at the Galata Museo del Mare of the Mu.MA, which form an integral part of the MEI.

Besides envisaging the construction of the new exhibition space, the Agreement provides for the establishment of a special legal entity, in the form of a Participatory Foundation, responsible for defining the aims, strategic guidelines, goals and procedures for the establishment of the scientific, documentary and disclosure centre dedicated to Italian emigration. Pending the establishment of the Foundation, the drafting of strategic cultural development plans and programmes for the promotion of cultural assets of public relevance was temporarily entrusted to a steering committee, appointed by the three signatory bodies in January 2020 and chaired by Paolo Masini.

When work began on the creation of the Museum, on the 9th of November 2021, with the public opening scheduled for the 11th of May 2022, the MEI Foundation - Museo Nazionale dell'Emigrazione Italiana was officially established, with the purposes set forth in the Development Agreement and detailed in articles 2 and 3 of the Articles of Association.

To allow the immediate entry into operation of the Foundation, pending the appointment of the Corporate Bodies (Chairman, Board of Directors, Steering Committee, Scientific Committee and Board of Auditors) the administration and management of the Foundation were assigned to a Sole Director, Pierangelo Campodonico (see C.V.).
